Minister & Staff

Reverend Robert Francis Murphy was raised in Rhode Island and California. “Part of my family was Roman Catholic and part was Protestant,” notes Bob. “I love both sides of my family. However, the decision to become a Unitarian Universalist was my own decision and it was one of the best decisions that I ever made!”

Before becoming a minister, Bob was an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer in the southwestern United States, earned a master's degree in public health from Boston University, worked for public and private health agencies then became a business agent for SEIU Local 254.  In 1991 Bob returned to college and subsequently received his Masters of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister and then spent several years as a 'circuit riding' minister for three congregations in North Carolina before coming to our fellowship in 2000. Bob is married to Lyn Dalzell, who is a physician’s assistant with a background in social work.

“Pairing environmentalism, economic justice“, a 2007 article in The Boston Globe described Bob’s leadership of Fellowship’s activities on behalf of environmental justice. In 2009 the UUA General Assembly adopted UUFF’s program, “Ethical Eating,” which Bob framed and moved forward, as a national subject for continuing study. For 2010, Bob and the congregation proposed “Green Revolution in Religion” as a study topic for approval by the UUA General Assembly. In 2011, the national Sierra Club honored Bob for his work in social justice and the environment with a Special Service Award, the first time that a religious leader has received this award.

Reverend Murphy’s office hours are on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 pm.
